Abstract: Students can peer into the career of a civil engineer by viewing a video that lasts approximately four minutes or by reading the text of the video that's illustrated with still photos. A preview of the video is also available. The video and text discuss the role of the civil engineer in road construction and depict the preparation and pouring of concrete on a new roadway. A challenge activity is provided for students to complete once they have viewed the video or read its transcript. Students are given a road-building plan and asked to determine the amount of dirt to be removed, along with a cost projection of this phase of the project. Links to answers are provided.
