Observe animations of earthquake waves

Abstract: Created for high school students, this resource presents animations of the P and S seismic waves produced by earthquakes. Each animation is equipped with movie control buttons, and an introductory paragraph explains the difference between P (also termed primary or compression) and S (secondary or shear) waves. By observing a marked dot in a slice of Earth, students can visualize P waves moving Earth materials parallel to the wave's direction and S waves moving Earth materials perpendicular to the wave. Students can view each animation separately or start them both in quick succession to compare the waves' relative speeds. Copyright 2005 Eisenhower National Clearinghouse
